Douglasville Attorney Jack Clay Introduces Justice David Nahmias of the Georgia Supreme Court at the West Metro Trial Lawyers' Association Luncheon

On Friday, January 29, 2010, Douglasville attorney Jack Clay spoke and introduced Justice David Nahmias to a crowd of fellow lawyers and local judges. Jack Clay was named as the first Chairman of the West Metro Trial Lawyers Association (WMTLA) in June of 2009. Thus far, this group of local lawyers dedicated to preserving the civil justice system for Georgians has hosted an evening party attended by local judges and elected officials. The WMTLA also hosted lunch featuring David Poythress, candidate for Georgia Governor, as a guest speaker. In the fall of 2009, the group hosted a bicycle helmet give-away booth at the Paulding County Public Service Appreciation Day.

We are grateful that Justice Nahmias came to speak to our group about his perspective as a recent appointee to the Georgia Supreme Court. Justice Nahmias graduated from Harvard Law School at the top of his class and served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review with President Barack Obama. After law school, he served as judicial clerk for Justice Scalia of the United Supreme Court. He has held many roles in the federal justice system working in the fight against terrorism. Prior to being appointed Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court by Governor Sonny Perdue, he served as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.

Justice Nahmias is a cordial, engaging, and a articulate speaker. He is also running for election this year. We are grateful that he chose to come and speak to our group.

Today I Joined The Christian Trial Lawyers' Association

The Christian Trial Lawyers' Association is a national group of trial lawyers committed to Christian principles in the practice of law.

While watching a video where people on the street were asked their opinions about attorneys, I was moved by one particular response. An older woman peered into the camera with a look of disgust and said she could not express her true feelings because, as she said, "I am a Christian." This dialogue has stuck in my mind ever since.

The sermon I heard in church today compared God's world with the "other world." When I really think about the woman on the video, I see why she feels that way. I see why anybody does when you consider how lawyers are portrayed in the media and, sadly, how some lawyers portray themselves. Turn on your television any day of the week during the day and you will be bombarded with lawyer commercials. I would venture to say that 75% or more of the commercials fall into the tacky or despicable category. Dramatic television is also filled with law shows. We are portrayed as outrageous, cunning, devious, and out for the almighty dollar. Have you ever seen a legal TV show where the lawyers were portrayed as honest, hard-working, ethical, and professional? I haven't seen many. The few I have tended to die a quick death, probably due to low ratings.

I know a large number of attorneys read my blog across Georgia and beyond. Our profession needs a resurrection in the figurative sense. We need repair and healing. Will you do your small part, wherever you are? God bless you and your family.

The Douglas County Courthouse is approximately 215,000 square feet and is the largest public building in Douglas County. There are approximately 600 parking spots around the courthouse, although this number has been increased in the past few years with the addition of another parking lot.
The "New" Douglas County Courthouse opened for operation in 1998. For years prior to 1998, lawyers went to court at the "Old" Douglas County Courthouse which is located in historic Downtown Douglasville on Highway 78 (Broad Street). The old Douglas County Courthouse operated between 1956 and 1998.
